050930 MISSION DEBRIEFING

PRESENT: Darklord, Woodie, Canon, Fred, Tone, and a special guest appearance, after a 2 year absence, all the way from Echuca, "Lucky Phil".

GTR was once again the game for the evening.
It scalability was reflected by running reasonably nicely on a 1.7 Celeron with Nvidia 4200Ti graphics.

After a multitude warmup laps, lengthy practice sessions followed by 5 laps of qualifying, it got down to the serious end of the evening where Darklord demostrated his prowess, with Woodie and Fred following closely on his heals at Monza. The second round was held at the more familiar Donington in the lesser powered group of cars. After playing this game for several hours, you begin to get used to the diferent tecniques involfed in driving within this game. Overall, a well executed event with no problems.

With the recent instalation of PAYG power, it’s been calculated that hosting the evening cost approximately $2. Not much for a lot of fun!

Session ended 02:00.

Results recorded for Donington: (Results must be replaced after each race, as this was the only file in the UserData LOG.)

  2. I was lucky enough to call into EDGE today – loved the new carpet…Then it was down to checking out the latest software for racing…mmm – in the presence of ToneZone I cast an eye over the above mentioned racing game…My personal comment – very very sad – and I think Tone even agreed with my findings…I love new stuff but this is hopeless! – Most unrealistic thing I have laid hands on in a long time…Oh and Fred agreed…It could just be me, but if a simulator is not realistic – is it worth playing? My answer is no, what about anyone else?Of course I would not have made comment had three other people told me how brilliant it is…Race Driver 2 is still wicked…no doubt!Pity it got canned because of system glitches (not the game take note – Roger reported yesterday to me every time a player called “canon” I think he said – joined it introduced lag…These issues should be easy to fix…

  3. After Mick’s test, I downloaded a patch (1.4) which has improved the handling considerably. The vehicles now behave more as they should, with the wheel returning to centre at slower speed, instead of continuing in the direction of the turn. However, the difference between the understeer entering a corner, then oversteer once past the apex is still present, though not as pronounced. The physics when you come off the track seem more consistent too.To be honest, I’ve never driven a Ferarri 540 or a Lamborgini for real, but for a car that expensive, I would imagine it would handle somewhat better than the representation within the game, especially in relation to powersliding through a corner (even at slower speeds), which V8 SuperCars 2 physics pulls off convincingly. I’m still hanging out for V8 SC 2005 – due out in Oz February, 2006. Let’s hope the crew at Codemasters can master the lag problems which have not only plagued the Enclave, but many other gamers around the globe as posted on various forums.

  4. AllegedlyGood to see it’s got an update…Doing a search on Google and browsing around a little has shed at least some light on why the handling is not right…It’s the GRAPHICS that are claimed to be the most realistic ever – not the actual driving – the word BLING comes to mind here – a favourites word of the Tone master…It’s pretty much been aimed at the 12yo and under market – not serious simulator gaming, after all it is from Atari (space invaders is still excellent though)At least this info gives me an exclamation as to why some individuals like the game.Just for the record – just because I have vented my opinion (I don’t think anyone would argue the accuracy of my opinion either) does not mean I think others should not play this “game” It’s just that I don’t get suckered into whiz-bang graphics at the expense of simulator realism! As I have mentioned earlier – I was modifying & building analogue controllers for Flight Simulator version 2.0 in the late eighties, and later while I was obtaining my pilots license in order to create a realistic home based flight simulator. So I have a pretty good idea of what controllers should feel & work likeNowadays Flight Simulator has FAA approval as a training device!
